Chimpanzee Somebody arrived at Tacugama in February 2013. She was captured as a young animal in a snare near Makeni and subsequently resold to a couple who took her to Bo. She lived there for nearly two years until they visited the sanctuary and realized that Somebody deserved a better life — together with her own kind.
Upon her arrival, Somebody was already six years old. She had lost a hand due to the snare, but that did not hold her back. On the contrary: despite her disability, she grew into an exceptionally skilled chimpanzee. She is known as one of the best tool users in the group and even played the lead role in the National Geographic documentary Chimp School (2016), which shows her ‘fishing’ for ants with great precision.
At the end of 2019, Somebody became a mother to Someone. His birth was the result of contraceptive failure, but he was immediately embraced by everyone at the sanctuary — by both humans and chimpanzees. Today, mother and son live together in one of Tacugama’s large forest enclosures, in the midst of a close-knit group of rescued chimpanzees.
By adopting Somebody & Someone, you support not only their lives, but also the care of many other chimpanzees who are given a second chance at Tacugama.
