When little Chicha was rescued by Tacugama rangers, she was only 7 months old. Chicha was confiscated in a small village in Loma Mountains National Park. It took the rangers more than two days to locate her after receiving an alarming phone call that someone was keeping a baby chimpanzee as a pet.
When the rangers found her, Chicha was in very poor condition. Tacugama feared for her life; they had not seen such an undernourished and traumatized baby chimp in a long time. But with a great deal of care and love, Chicha recovered miraculously, and in a few months, she became one of the most cheerful and charming orphans at the sanctuary.
