Chimpanzee Stacey was only three months old when she was rescued as an orphan in December 2025. She has no teeth yet and is completely dependent on formula milk and intensive care. Day and night, her caregivers and the veterinary team are ready to provide her with what she would normally receive from her mother: warmth, nutrition, and safety.
According to bystanders, Stacey was found after farmers chased a group of chimpanzees from their field. Her mother supposedly “abandoned” her. But one thing is certain: a chimpanzee mother never voluntarily leaves her baby behind. She will—along with other group members—go to extremes to protect her young. It is therefore highly likely that Stacey lost her mother during this violence. In incidents of this kind, it is estimated that 8 to 10 adult chimpanzees are killed for every infant taken.
We cannot say much about Stacey’s personality yet. She is calm and, fortunately, is eating well now. Her first teeth will come through soon—an important next step in her young life.
